Shafaqna English- Major international study has discovered that people with genetically lower cholesterol levels have a significantly reduced risk of developing dementia.
The research, analyzing data from over one million people, found that certain genetic variants linked to naturally lower cholesterol were associated with up to 80% lower dementia risk.
The study simulated the effects of cholesterol-lowering medications by examining genetic profiles that mirror how drugs like statins work. Researchers believe high cholesterol may contribute to dementia through atherosclerosis and small blood clots in the brain.
While the findings suggest that maintaining low cholesterol levels could help protect against dementia, the team emphasizes that long-term clinical trials are needed to confirm whether cholesterol-lowering medications can directly replicate this protective effect.
