UN’s Chief expresses concern over violence in Tanzania

Shafaqna English- UN’s Secretary-General Antonio Guterres voiced “deep concern” over post-election violence in Tanzania, his spokesman said on Friday (31 Oct 2025). He deplored the loss of life and extends his condolences to the families of the victims, Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.

His remarks came after protests erupted during Tanzania’s general election on Wednesday, as citizens voted for a president, 264 National Assembly members, and local councilors, with voters expressing frustration over what they described as a lack of meaningful competition. According to the local media reports, about 700 people have been killed during three days of election protests in Tanzania.

Guterres underscores the critical importance of safeguarding fundamental rights, notably the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, including access to information. He calls for a thorough and impartial investigation into all allegations of excessive use of force,” Dujarric said.

The UN’s Chief also voiced alarm over reports of enforced disappearances and detentions in the lead-up to the elections. Calling for calm, Guterres urged all stakeholders to exercise restraint, reject violence, and engage in inclusive and constructive dialogue to address grievances and prevent further escalation of tensions.
