Shafaqna English- Iraqi Weather Forecaster Sadiq Attia confirmed that Baghdad is facing severe environmental degradation, with the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching the purple level which indicates extremely dangerous pollution levels.
Attia said the spike in pollutants is caused by stagnant air, unregulated industrial activity, and widespread trash burning, all of which contribute to a dense layer of toxic smoke over the capital.
Footage captured by IraqiNews.com shows streets covered in what appears to be heavy fog, but residents reported clear sulphur-like odors, indicating acute air contamination. The smoke has pushed horizontal visibility to very low levels, leaving millions exposed to hazardous conditions.
