Shafaqna English- Residents of Kabul face an ongoing water crisis amid the cold winter weather. Some locals say they are forced to buy clean drinking water due to the lack of an accessible supply.
Baghi Shah a resident of Kabul’s District 9 said: “There’s a shortage of water in Qala-e-Zaman Khan. Electricity also comes and goes; sometimes we have none at all.”
Gul Mohammad Khan another Kabul resident said: “We buy water with money; mineral water is brought in. People are poor; they can only afford one or two small containers.”
Officials at Kabul’s Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Company say several water projects are underway to help resolve the issue.
Hamidullah Yalani a water affairs expert noted: “Unless surface water sources like the Panjshir River or Lalander Dam are connected to Kabul’s water network, underground water alone cannot meet the city’s growing demand.”
