Ex-Iraqi President named next UN’s refugee chief

Shafaqna English- Iraq’s ex-President Barham Salih has been chosen as the next High Commissioner for Refugees for the United Nations according to a letter from UN’s Secretary-General.

According to the document dated Dec. 11, seen by Anadolu, UN’s Secretary-General Guterres plans to propose Salih’s election as the next high commissioner for refugees to the UN’s General Assembly at the end of 2025 following the conclusion of Filippo Grandi’s current mandate. Guterres intends to propose Salih for five-year term starting 01 Jan 2026.
