Shafaqna English- The Spanish Congress of Deputies rejected a bill on Tuesday that was promoted by the far-right Vox party, which aimed to ban the use of Islamic veils, such as the niqab and burqa, in public spaces.
The bill was defeated with 177 votes against it, primarily from the governing coalition and its left-wing partners, compared to 170 votes in favor. Vox’s proposal received support from the conservative Popular Party (PP) and the regionalist UPN. Even though the PP had indicated its intention to vote in favor of Vox’s bill, the proposal ultimately failed to gather enough support to proceed to a debate.
