7 Human rights organizations urge UNHRC on torture in Bahrain prisons

SHAFAQNA – Seven human rights organizations released a report on the dire situation of human rights in Bahrain, including the torture of political prisoners, calling on the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to take immediate action to stop the Al Khalifa regime’s inhumane conducts.

In their report, the seven rights bodies have asked the UNHRC to swiftly deploy two special rapporteurs to Bahrain to address the cases of torture and the harsh treatment of detainees, according to Arabic-language Lualua TV.

The reports has enumerated cases of torture in Bahraini prisons, confession under duress, and mistreatment of political activists held in detention, asking the UNHRC members to halt financial and training programs for the Manama regime’s security forces until the Bahraini government complies with the international human rights norms.

A number of the groups compiling the report include Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy, Bahrain Centre for Human Rights (BCHR), Bahrain Human Rights Watch, and European-Bahraini Organization for Human Rights (EBOHR).

According to a report released by BCHR in February, the Manama government detained 1,300 anti-regime protesters and activists in 2016, including 187 children.

In 2016, the Bahraini judiciary issued 91 life sentences and 4 death penalties, while the citizenship of 204 people were revoked, it added.

Thousands of anti-regime protesters have held demonstrations in Bahrain on an almost daily basis ever since a popular uprising began in mid-February 2011. They are demanding that the Al Khalifah dynasty relinquish power.

Scores of people have lost their lives and many others have been arrested as a result of the crackdown.
