Yemen first helped the world discover coffee hundreds of years ago. More recently, this mountainous, war-ravaged country, which shares borders with Saudi Arabia and Oman, has been exporting its coffee culture instead. Across the U.S., Yemeni coffeehouses are opening at a rapid rate.
Across the U.S., Yemeni coffeehouses are popping up at a fast pace. Data from Technomic, a consulting firm focused on the restaurant industry, shows that the number of locations run by six major chains serving Yemeni-style drinks grew by 50% last year, totaling 136. This count does not reflect the many independent cafes and smaller chains that offer coffees and teas imported directly from Yemen.
