The rich plain located between the Euphrates and its neighboring river, the Tigris, was one of the cradles of human civilization.
Researchers have deciphered the origins of the Euphrates River, reaching back to a time long before the great urban centers that emerged only millennia ago. Based on seismic images of buried sediments and other evidence, they stated that the Euphrates was likely born between 3.6 million and 1.6 million years ago as a result of two earlier river systems merging due to tectonic activity in the Taurus Mountains in southern modern-day Turkey.
