Growing discontent among rural Americans with Trump

Shafaqna English– Living in rural Stevensville, Montana, Brian Rauch has experienced the pinch of pricier gasoline on his 30-mile (50-km) commute to see his doctor. He’s also seen food costs climb, and as a former Air Force serviceman, he sees no sensible reason behind the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.

These reasons help explain why the 42-year-old is increasingly critical of how President Donald Trump is performing — a politician he voted for in each of the last three presidential races — which puts him among a growing segment of rural Americans disappointed with Trump’s governance from Washington.

Polling data from Reuters/Ipsos (June 3-8) shows that Trump’s favorability among rural residents fell to 50% in June, the lowest level on record. That compares with a 60% approval rating in February 2025, right after his presidency began.
