Prosecutors call for 1yr jail term for Jakarta governor in blasphemy case

SHAFAQNA – Indonesian prosecutors have asked for a one-year prison term for Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama on blasphemy charges, Reuters reported. Purnama, nicknamed ‘Ahok’, is Jakarta’s first ethnic Chinese governor and the first Christian in 50 years. He was recently defeated in his election bid against Muslim rival Anies Baswedan, who was backed by conservative clerics. Hundreds of thousands of Muslims have recently joined anti-Ahok rallies, demanding his arrest for alleged blasphemy. Purnama was accused of blasphemy back in 2016, when a video released on the Internet showed him telling voters they had been deceived if they believed that a specific verse in the Koran banned Muslims from voting for a non-Muslim leader.
