Hidden Layers of World Cup in Mexico City

Shafaqna English- Mexico City’s famous Paseo de Reforma is lined with big screens ahead of the World Cup last-16 showdown between Mexico and England on Sunday(5 Jul 2026). Yet amidst the festive displays, there are also somber reminders of the pain that continues to shadow the event.

Interspersed among the large displays along the capital’s key boulevard are signs for more than 135,000 missing Mexicans. That figure has climbed dramatically ever since 2006, when ex-President Felipe Calderón declared war on the nation’s drug cartels.
