Shafaqna English- Older adults who maintain exceptionally fast walking speeds into their eighties are significantly less likely to develop cognitive impairment, according to a new study, suggesting that superior mobility is a powerful indicator of brain resilience rather than reduced Alzheimer’s disease pathology, according to PsyPost.
A study published in Neurology found that adults aged 80 and older with unusually fast walking speeds—known as “super movers”—had a 51% lower risk of developing cognitive impairment than their peers over an average follow-up period of 3.4 to 5.4 years.
Researchers analyzed data from nearly 4,000 adults across the United States, Europe, England, China, and Mexico. Super movers were defined as individuals whose walking speed ranked among the top 7% for their age and sex.
A separate analysis of nearly 200 older adults found that super movers experienced slower declines in memory, processing speed, and visual-spatial abilities. Brain MRI scans also showed they had larger hippocampal volumes, a brain region critical for memory and navigation.
However, autopsy data from nearly 700 participants revealed that super movers had similar levels of Alzheimer’s-related amyloid plaques and tau tangles as other older adults. Despite carrying comparable levels of disease-related brain pathology, they maintained better cognitive performance and were less likely to have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
The findings suggest that exceptional mobility reflects greater brain resilience—the ability to maintain cognitive function despite age-related brain changes—rather than protection from Alzheimer’s pathology itself.
Researchers caution that the study was observational and does not prove that walking faster prevents dementia. Instead, both fast walking and preserved cognition may reflect underlying biological, lifestyle, and environmental factors that support healthy aging.
The team hopes future research will identify the mechanisms behind this resilience, including the roles of physical activity, diet, sleep, and other lifestyle factors, with the goal of developing strategies to help preserve brain health throughout aging.
