Shafaqna English– Employees at the Ukrainian steel giant Zaporizhstal have succeeded in keeping the enormous plant operational, even though it has been repeatedly targeted by Russian drones, missiles, and bombs for years on end.
However, this nearly one-hundred-year-old mill, which lies at the center of Ukraine’s southeastern steel production, is now confronting a different kind of challenge that endangers its very existence: import quotas and carbon emission tariffs imposed by the European Union.
For a long time, steel has been one of the main pillars supporting Ukraine’s economy, making up 15 percent of its overall export value. The European Union remains the largest market for these products, taking in roughly four-fifths of all Ukrainian steel exports.
