Shafaqna English– A letter issued on Monday(24 Aug 2026) by the finance ministers of six EU member states reveals that these countries are calling for the 27-nation bloc to hold discussions in September over a framework for taxing the extraordinary profits that oil firms have reaped as a result of Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Poland, and Austria have sent a letter to Ireland, which currently presides over the EU’s rotating council, asking that the presidency place the windfall tax proposal on the official agenda for the next EU finance ministers’ meeting, set for September 18–19 in Dublin.
