Shafaqna English– With its Sunday(30 Aug 2026) launch, the United States space agency inaugurated a new flagship astronomical endeavour, sending skyward a former spy satellite that has been ingeniously reconfigured to serve as a wide-field cosmic observer.
The mission marks a pivotal step in NASA’s quest to decode the fundamental forces shaping the universe, leveraging the telescope’s unique ability to capture vast, uninterrupted swaths of the night sky with unprecedented clarity.
Valued at approximately $4 billion, the Roman Space Telescope was successfully launched from Florida’s Cape Canaveral facility using a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, taking off in the early morning hours under pristine weather conditions.
Although the official mission timeline is set at five years, NASA has confirmed that the telescope carries sufficient propellant to potentially extend its active service life by an additional five years, doubling its projected operational window and maximising the scientific return on investment.
