Major step in discovery of dark matter

Shafaqna English– Researchers have reported a potential milestone in the ongoing quest to detect dark matter, after recording suggestive signals during an experiment conducted nearly one mile (1.6 kilometers) beneath the Earth’s surface in South Dakota.

While the findings are intriguing, the scientific team has stopped short of claiming a definitive detection of this mysterious cosmic substance, emphasizing that further verification is required before any conclusive announcement can be made.

The experiment at the Sanford Underground Research Facility, built deep inside a former gold mine in the Black Hills, has captured a particle interaction that aligns with the characteristics of the long-theorized WIMP—an acronym for weakly interacting massive particle.

As one of the most favored candidates in dark matter physics, the potential detection of a WIMP would represent a transformative advance in our understanding of the universe’s fundamental composition.
