Shafaqna English– In a coordinated statement, the sitting and former heads of the ICC’s States Parties assembly have warned that the ongoing campaign to diplomatically sideline the Court represents a calculated strategy.
Its ultimate objective, they contend, is to weaken the international legal system’s credibility, especially since the Trump administration has been intensifying its pressure on allied and non-allied nations alike to cut ties with the Hague-based tribunal.
In an op-ed that was published on Thursday, the two officials elaborated on their concerns. They explained that efforts to isolate the Court can take various forms: encouraging current member states to withdraw from the Rome Statute, or pressuring non-member states to participate in joint actions designed to strip the Court of its effectiveness.
They stressed that these tactics are not simply aimed at harming the ICC as a single entity, but are fundamentally intended to undermine global confidence in the very idea of a rules-based international order.
