Diesel in America is more expensive than ever

Shafaqna English– The U.S. diesel market experienced an extraordinary price shock on Thursday(3 Sep 2026), with average retail values climbing to a level never before recorded in the nation’s history.

This meteoric rise is underpinned by a severe and rapidly deteriorating global supply picture, which has been thrown into disarray by two major geopolitical developments occurring in tandem.

The renewed confrontation between American and Iranian military forces has rekindled fears of a blockade or attack on key Middle Eastern shipping lanes, while repeated Ukrainian strikes on Russian petroleum processing facilities—which account for a substantial portion of the world’s diesel exports—have dealt a direct blow to global refining capacity.

Data compiled by GasBuddy, an industry-standard price tracker, indicates that the nationwide average has climbed to $5.820 per gallon.

This new benchmark narrowly beats the erstwhile record of $5.819 per gallon, which had persisted since June 17, 2022, when it was set in the turbulent weeks following the outbreak of war in Eastern Europe.

The fact that prices have now surpassed even those crisis-era levels underscores the fragility of the current energy landscape and the vulnerability of diesel supply chains to geopolitical shocks that appear to be multiplying in frequency and intensity.
