Shafaqna English– The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) announced on Wednesday that global average temperatures are likely to cross the crucial 1.5°C threshold within the next few years. This will lead to more frequent and severe extreme weather events, while putting additional stress on ecosystems, glaciers, and coastal cities that are already vulnerable to sea-level rise.
UNEP added that while it is still possible to bring temperatures back below 1.5°C, this outcome is highly uncertain and would require urgent and deep cuts in emissions, along with active removal of carbon dioxide already present in the atmosphere.
