Fed vs Trump over rates amid strong job growth

Shafaqna English– Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh finds himself in a difficult position following Friday’s robust jobs data, which strengthens the argument for raising interest rates, while simultaneously facing an unprecedented threat from President Trump to halt trade with certain nations unless the Fed cuts rates.

Warsh must now choose between two unpalatable options: raising rates at the upcoming meeting and provoking the president’s anger, or holding steady and undermining his own credibility after recently adopting a hawkish stance.

The upcoming Fed decision is set against the backdrop of November’s congressional elections, where Trump’s Republican Party is fighting to maintain its narrow majorities. The outcome will largely depend on next week’s inflation data: if price pressures continue their recent moderation, a rate hike may be avoided; but if they remain elevated, the Fed may have no choice but to act.
