Iraq achieves self-sufficiency in wheat & dates in 2026

FAO establishes partnerships

Shafaqna English- Iraq has achieved self-sufficiency in wheat and dates in the 2026 agricultural season, the Iraqi Agriculture Ministry announced Friday.

Ministry spokesperson Qusay al-Hattab told Shafaq News that Iraq had maintained wheat self-sufficiency for three consecutive agricultural seasons, including the current 2026 season.

The ministry has developed new wheat seed varieties that are tolerant of salinity and climate-related stresses, while providing farmers with subsidized irrigation sprinklers through installment plans extending up to 10 years, with a one-year grace period, al-Hattab explained.
