Shafaqna English– Climate change is causing South Korea’s soft corals near Jeju Island to slump and die, as rising temperatures and extreme weather disrupt their internal fluid pressure. Divers and scientists are deeply concerned; Ko Myeong‑hyo, a veteran haenyeo, describes watching vibrant coral gardens turn white and collapse.
The Paran Citizen Science Center reports ongoing damage, with about half of one coral cluster off Beomseom struggling. Researchers have documented a major slumping event in 2024 and warn that prolonged heat and El Niño could worsen conditions.
Other stressors include freshwater from the Yangtze River and record heatwaves. These corals, vital as nurseries for Jeju’s marine life and part of a UNESCO biosphere reserve, face collapse that could devastate the entire ecosystem.
Meanwhile, older haenyeo like Ko’s mother report dwindling catches and shorter workdays due to warming waters, highlighting the human and environmental cost of the crisis.
