Shafaqna English– The cold climate, abundant renewable energy sources, vast shale gas reserves, and large uninhabited terrains of Patagonia are making this remote Argentine region increasingly attractive to global investors seeking locations for hyperscale data centers.
Meanwhile, major tech companies—so‑called hyperscalers—are facing mounting opposition in many established markets, where local communities and activists criticise data centres for overburdening electricity networks, exacerbating environmental degradation, and driving up household energy costs.
In Argentina, however, these projects are still in their infancy and have not yet provoked any significant public resistance, mainly because the local population has not directly experienced the negative side‑effects.
Advocates, on the other hand, emphasise that such facilities are indispensable for supporting the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence, can bring substantial tax income to provincial treasuries, and offer considerable scope for integrating green technologies to minimise their ecological footprint.
