NGO chief criticises ‘hypocrisy’ in Afghan women’s rights calls amid aid cuts

Shafaqna English- The head of the Norwegian Refugee Council aid group, Jan Egeland, criticised the “hypocrisy” of countries demanding rights for Afghan women while cutting humanitarian aid.

Afghanistan has seen a sharp decline in international aid since 2021, when the Taliban authorities returned to power. They have since imposed a series of rules limiting women’s access to education and public life.

In an interview with AFP in Kabul, Egeland said that it was right of foreign countries “to demand, like we do, education for Afghan girls, work rights for Afghan women”.
