NASA & IBM release AI model to study Moon

Shafaqna English– IBM and NASA announced on Thursday the release of an open-source AI model aimed at helping scientists process and analyze decades of lunar observation data. The model is also designed to support plans for a sustained human presence on the Moon, making it a dual-purpose tool for both research and future exploration.

This release highlights the increasing role of AI in space science, where vast datasets require sophisticated tools to extract meaningful insights and inform mission planning.

The NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model is an AI tool that is freely available to the public and designed to study the Moon. It was trained using more than 30 layers of data collected by nine instruments on four NASA missions, including the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.

The breadth and depth of this training data enable the model to analyze lunar terrain, identify resources such as ice, and map craters, making it a significant asset for both scientific research and future lunar exploration.
