Wildfires in Indonesia trigger health crisis

Shafaqna English– Data released by Indonesia’s health ministry on Thursday revealed that respiratory infections linked to dangerous pollution from wildfires have more than doubled in a little over a week.

This sharp increase underscores the severe public health impact of the ongoing wildfire crisis, as hazardous air quality continues to affect large numbers of people across the country. The rapid rise in infections highlights the urgent need for measures to protect public health and address the root causes of the pollution.

Across the Indonesian archipelago, fires have been burning through extensive areas of forest and peatland, resulting in a significant rise in hazardous emissions. The provinces hardest hit are on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo, where the fires have led to severe air pollution.

Driven by dry conditions and land-clearing practices, these fires are generating dangerous levels of smoke and toxic particles, threatening the health of millions and causing widespread environmental damage.
