Mexico & Washington accelerate trade deal talks

Shafaqna English– According to six sources familiar with the talks, Mexico and the United States are rushing to secure a bilateral trade deal before the U.S. midterm elections in less than eight weeks, with the collapse of Canadian negotiations with Washington adding urgency. A Mexico-based source said both countries want a deal before the midterms.

The negotiations seek an interim agreement under which Mexico could gain relief from some U.S. tariffs while addressing U.S. demands on automotive content and Chinese investment.

Though there is no formal deadline, officials in both countries see political benefits in reaching a deal before the November 3 elections, when Trump’s Republican Party risks losing control of Congress, and an accord would allow both leaders to claim a win amid domestic political challenges.

The Mexican source said time is of the essence for Mexico due to a weak economy and falling debt ratings, noting that President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration, which presented its 2027 budget this week, views a U.S. trade deal as critical to reassuring markets and investors.

Mexico’s economy ministry said there are no specific deadlines at present and stressed its continued commitment to dialogue with Washington, while the U.S. Trade Representative and White House did not immediately respond to comment requests.
