Shafaqna English- Nine Islamic schools across Canada increased security measures after receiving an anonymous email threatening violence against Muslims and declaring that Canada would be “Islam free”, prompting multiple police forces to investigate.
The Muslim Association of Canada (MAC) announced that the same email was sent to nine of its schools in Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec over a 24-hour period. The message, signed by a “Citizen Vigilante,” threatened the “slaughter” of Muslims.
MAC spokesperson Nabil Sultan said the organization had hired additional security to protect students. He said the group regularly received threatening and Islamophobic messages, but this was the first time its schools had been targeted so directly.
Police in Ontario’s Peel region reported they were investigating a letter containing “hate-motivated threats” against Islamic institutions and had increased patrols near mosques and schools. Police in Ontario and the Waterloo region were also investigating threats sent to Islamic schools.
Sultan added the threats against MAC’s schools come amid a backdrop of rising Islamophobia in Canada.
The latest data from Statistics Canada shows the number of police-reported hate crimes against Muslims rose by more than 170 per cent between 2020 and 2024.
