Shafaqna English- The Imam Hussain (AS) holy shrine gained the ‘Galileo Galilei’ International Award for innovative and creative solutions.
The ‘Warith’ (Successor) International Cancer Institute, affiliated with the Imam Hussain (AS) holy shrine, announced a major scientific achievement while representing Iraq in Valencia, Spain.
A research project presented by the institute won the prestigious 2025 ‘Galileo Galilei’ Award in the category of innovative and creative solutions.
The institute said in a statement that the achievement was announced at the closing ceremony of the European Congress of Medical Physics in Valencia. The research was the result of extensive international cooperation involving researchers and specialists from 23 countries.
The statement said the purpose of the award-winning scientific research was to develop an accurate and practical method for measuring radiation doses received during the use of advanced cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) techniques for cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy sessions.
The process was intended to ensure the highest level of safety and technical accuracy while therapeutic doses were being administered.
The ‘Warith’ Cancer Institute also said its participation in the international event and the research project’s first-place finish demonstrated its firm commitment to keeping pace with the latest global developments in medical physics and radiotherapy, while enhancing Iraq’s position in scientific and applied research at the international level.
The title of the award-winning research paper, co-authored by Dr. Hossam Rajab, was “Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) Imaging in Radiotherapy: Dose Assessment Using a Practical Setup at the International Level.”
The significant achievement reflected the continued efforts of healthcare institutions affiliated with the Imam Hussain (AS) holy shrine to use advanced technologies and conduct rigorous research for the benefit of patients, while providing the highest standards of healthcare in line with internationally recognized criteria.
The award is presented annually to a pioneer in the field of optics who, under difficult and unequal conditions in terms of facilities and equipment, succeeds in conducting outstanding and significant research in optics at the global level. Optics is a branch of physics that studies the behavior and properties of light.
The award was established in 1993 and includes the ‘Galileo’ Medal and financial support for advancing research.
