Fed officials exercise caution before October meeting

Shafaqna English– The Fed rate hike October meeting is now less certain. This week, two senior Federal Reserve officials made a notably clear argument. They said the central bank should gather more economic data before deciding on another rate increase.

Their stance led many investors to stop betting on a rate hike. The Fed rate hike October meeting, scheduled for late October, was once seen as likely. Now, market expectations have shifted.

John Williams leads the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. He spoke at the University at Buffalo on Tuesday. Williams made clear that there is no urgency to adjust monetary policy right now.

Williams also serves as vice chair of the Federal Open Market Committee. The FOMC is the body that sets interest rates. He noted that “one further upward adjustment” in the policy rate may be appropriate later this year.
