Shafaqna English– Maura Healey, the governor of Massachusetts, asked the Trump administration to speed up its review of a natural gas pipeline. A unit of Enbridge, a major Canadian energy company, is developing the project.
The pipeline is planned for the New England region. Healey’s request marks a clear shift in her position. In the past, she often opposed new fossil fuel infrastructure. Now, she is pushing for faster approval. This change reflects growing concern over high energy costs and supply reliability in the region.
For roughly ten years, states in the US Northeast opposed most new fossil fuel projects. They prioritized climate goals and clean energy. In recent years, however, their position has shifted. Several states are now more accepting of fossil fuel infrastructure.
The driving force is economic. Energy bills for consumers have soared. Many households and businesses are struggling. State leaders face growing pressure to lower costs. They also want to ensure reliable energy supplies. As a result, they are softening their opposition to fossil fuel projects.
