Shafaqna English- Francesca Albanese, the United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, has warned of the severe humanitarian consequences posed by Israel’s extensive network of military checkpoints throughout the occupied West Bank.
He said checkpoints, gates, and movement restrictions do far more than disrupt Palestinians’ travel: they fragment Palestinian territory and deprive people of access to work, education, health care, and their livelihoods.
Albanese said the checkpoint system turns Palestinians’ daily journeys into an ordeal, making access to work, school, hospitals, or family members dependent on a soldier’s decision or whether a gate happens to be open. She said these restrictions rob Palestinians of hours and days of their lives and separate families from one another.
