SHAFAQNA – Emergency services were scrambled to the site of the collision outside a community centre on Westgate Road.
Up to seven people – potentially including children – were hit before medics rushed to the scene.
A 42-year-old woman has been arrested as police inquiries continue.
The North East ambulance service have confirmed they are dealing with pedestrians who have been involved in a collision with a car.
Reports on social media claim those hit were celebrating Eid, although this remains unconfirmed.
Magdalena Lukasha was near the sport centre with her family at the time of the smash.
She told The Chronicle: “There were lots of children there, people were gathering for prayers for Eid.
“My husband said he saw the car hit around six or seven people.”
The force tweeted: “Police are aware of an incident outside Westgate Sports Centre.
“Emergency services are in attendance and enquiries are on-going. Police have made one arrest.”
