The Grand Ayatollah Nouri Hamedani’s Fatwa about incurable illnesses

SHAFAQNA – The Grand Ayatollah Nouri Hamadani answered a question about incurable illnesses.

Question: In cases of incurable illnesses such as progressive cancer, or illnesses where patient’s death is certain, if the doctor is facing two alternatives where one is to continue the treatment in a way that increases patient’s life a bit longer, but the patient suffers a lot; and the second method is that patient lives shorter but suffers less; in such conditions if the patient chooses the second method, is the doctor allowed to authorize it?

The Grand Ayatollah Nouri Hamedani: According to the premise of the question; no, the doctor is not allowed to do such an act, and it is Haram.
