Turkey Says US-led Airstrikes on Syrian Mosque A War Crime

SHAFAQNA- Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey, Numan Kurtulmus, described the airstrike on a mosque near Aleppo, Syria, as a “war crime”.

“It is not something tolerable, that bombing of a place of worship with praying people inside,” Kurtulmus said in a statement to reporters from the Turkish city of Canakkale on Friday.

“It is going to be understood in the coming hours who is responsible for this bombing and who is behind it.”

“There are extremely sad things happening in Syria and these things are harming the civilians, such as the one last night,” he continued, AMN reported.

He then emphasized that Turkey did not know who was responsible for the airstrike, but all evidence shows it was a US-led airstrike.

“We do not have much of information for the moment. Who did the bombing? Who is behind it is not known yet in detail. No matter who ever it is, harming civilians is a war crime. It is not something acceptable. I think it is going to be understood in the coming hours who is responsible for this bombing and who is behind it. We cannot talk about it much due to lack of information for the moment. But in any case it is a crime against the humanity. It is a war crime. It is not something tolerable that bombing of a place of worship with praying people inside.”

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various foreign-backed terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.

According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
