Erdogan to be arrested in Sweden

SHAFAQNA – Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish president has been filed with a lawsuit in Sweden by the Swedish lawmakers. He was accused of “genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.”

Mr. Erdogan’s role in the bloody conflict between Turkish forces and Kurdish militants since 2015 was the core subject of the lawsuit that was filed by five Swedish MP. As Erdogan, Swedish MP, said, “We are five lawmakers handing in a complaint… (requesting) punishment for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.” Ms. Lillemets is one of the signatories of the lawsuit talking in a news conference in Stockholm.

The decision on the lawsuit will be made by Sweden’s prosecutor who will launch an investigation from the complaint if it will be accepted. The legislation may even lead to arrest warrant for Erdogan in Sweden provided that the claims is pursued by Prosecutor.

The legislation provides with a thorough definition of genocide which is attributed to Erdogan by the lawsuit. Part of the legislation reads:

Anyone, who in order to completely or partially destroy a national or ethnic group of people….is guilty of genocide.

It is hoped by the Swedish MPs that other European countries consider the same legislation for the Turkish dictator. Carl Schlyter, the Green Party MP, says this could be a helpful strategy in preventing human disaster in Turkey. He also said, “If (Mr. Erdogan) is hindered from roaming around in Europe and influencing European countries the way he wants, then I hope that this will affect his politics.”

Erdogan has imposed unprecedented pressure over Turkish activists, journalists and people since 2015. The oppressions got harsher after a suspicious coup in July 2016 after which Erdogan arrested and executed large number of military and political characters across Turkey.
