Inappropriate Actions During the Months of Muharram and Safar

SHAFAQNA- The religious authority Grand Ayatullah Seyed Ali al-Sistani has responded to a question about inappropriate actions during the months of Muharram and Safar.

The following is the text of the question:

Some of the believers, during the months of Muharram and Safar, may perform a number of acts that may not be suitable, for example: marriage, moving to a new home, purchasing new things such as furniture, clothing, etc., and so on. What is the appropriate religious decree in this regard?

The following is the text of Ayatullah Sistani’s answer:

It is not haraam to practice what is mentioned above on the days of [religious] occasions, except what is counted as an act of irreverence, such as holding parties or wearing makeups on the tenth day [of Muharram].

Yes, acts that people are usually not supposed to do in the days of suffering and grief of their loved ones, should not be carried out in the days marked by calamities and sadness for Ahl al-Bayt (A), except for what is necessitated by conventional exigencies. Otherwise, they should be done at a time when the requirements of mourning and sadness are not disturbed.
