TYPE 3C DIABETES IS A MUCH BIGGER THREAT THAN DOCTORS WOULD EXPECT (STUDY)

SHAFAQN-

A new report revealed a huge risk existent for many people with diabetes. Apart from type 1 and 2, there is another subtype of the disease, type 3c. However, most of the time, doctors are not able to diagnose it properly, which might put the health of the patients in great danger. This usually happens as they don’t receive the treatment they actually need.

WHAT IS TYPE 3C DIABETES?

This is the first study which closely analyzed different types of diabetes. It uses a sample of 2 million people, and the researchers looked which type occurred most frequently, and how accurate the diagnoses were. However, they gave the most attention to a slightly unusual type of the disease, namely type 3c diabetes.

This type 3c usually occurs when the pancreas is affected. If the organ has an unusual growth of tissue above, has a high degree of inflammation, or has had a part of it removed during surgery, its capacity to produce insulin is affected. As a result, the patient develops type 3c diabetes.

THIS TYPE OF DIABETES IS OFTEN MISDIAGNOSED

The results of the study weren’t too encouraging. Out of all the patients who had previously had pancreatic problems, a worrying percentage of 97.3 received a faulty diagnose. Therefore, instead of type 3c diabetes, they had received a type 2 diagnose. This is quite serious, as type 3c requires a more rapid insulin treatment than type 2. If they don’t receive this treatment in time, they might suffer serious health consequences.

Also, the researchers were surprised to find out how often this subtype occurred. In fact, adults have more chances to develop type 3c diabetes than type 1, as 205 more participants in the sample were diagnosed with the disease. This should raise awareness about the newly discovered strain, so as to avoid a future health crisis.

The study has been published in the journal Diabetes Care.
