Human Rights Bodies Call for Release of Bahraini Political Prisoners

SHAFAQNA – The letter slammed the terrible conditions the Bahraini-Danish human rights activist and other political prisoners are undergoing, the Manama Post reported.

It also called for providing the prisoners with necessary medical care and allowing their families to visit their loved ones.

Abdulhadi al-Khawaja is currently in prison in Bahrain following the suppression of pro-democracy protests in the Bahraini uprising.

He is former president and co-founder of the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights (BCHR), a nonprofit non-governmental organization which works to promote human rights in Bahrain.

In April 2011, al-Khawaja was arrested and tried as part of a campaign of repression by the Bahraini authorities following the Bahraini uprising.

He was sentenced on June 22, 2011, along with eight other activists, to life imprisonment.
