What is the ruling on fasting for breastfeeding mothers? The Grand Ayatollah Sistani’s Fatwa

SHAFAQNA – The Grand Ayatollah Sistani answered a question about fasting for breastfeeding mothers.

Question: What is the ruling on fasting for breastfeeding mothers in the month of Ramadhan?

The Grand Ayatollah Sistani: A breastfeeding woman whose milk is not enough (for the baby), whether she is the mother or the nanny of the child; if breastfeeding is harmful for her or the child, fasting is not Wajib for her, and must pay the specified amount of food to the poor for everyday (750 grams of bread or pasta or flour), and then do Qadha (later on fast for missed days). But according to Wajib precaution, this ruling is for the case when there is only this particular way of feeding the baby, and if there is another way for feeding the baby for example using powdered milk; according to wajib precaution, must fast.
