More Protests in Bahrain against Detention of Opposition Leaders

SHAFAQNA Bahrainis once again staged massive anti-regime rallies in protest at the continued detention of opposition leaders, especially Secretary General of al-Wefaq National Islamic Society Sheikh Ali Salman. People in various parts of the Persian Gulf country, including Al Markh, A’ali, and Bilad al-Qadeem, the hometown of Sheikh Salman on the outskirts of the capital Manama, took to the streets on Saturday and called for the immediate release of political prisoners, al-Wefaq said on its Twitter Account.

Demonstrators expressed solidarity with the jailed political activists and reiterated the continuation of the protests until the their “legitimate rights” are restored. Similar peaceful rallies were held on Friday in Bilad al-Qadeem, and other parts of Bahrain like Musalla, Diraz and Malkiya. Sheikh Salman was arrested in late December 2014 over alleged anti-regime incitements. Manama accused him of seeking regime change and collaborating with foreign powers. Bahrain, a staunch ally of the United States in the Persian Gulf region, has been witnessing almost daily protests against the ruling Al Khalifa dynasty since early 2011, with Manama using heavy-handed measures in an attempt to crush the demonstrations.
