Iran summons Saudi chargé d’affaires over harassment at Jeddah airport

SHAFAQNA – Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Saudi chargé d’affaires in Tehran in protest over the alleged sexual harassment of two teenage Iranian pilgrims by Jeddah airport officials.

Last week, in the absence of the Saudi ambassador to Iran, Foreign Ministry summoned Saudi chargé d’affaires to explain on the heinous act by Jeddah airport security officials, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hassan Qashqavi said on Monday.

Slamming the airport officials’ actions as a “heinous and inhumane crime”, Qashqavi said following the summoning that Saudi officials arrested the two suspects after conducting investigations, and promised that appropriate measures would be adopted.

The airport officials reportedly separated two Iranians from other members of their group who were returning from their pilgrimage under the pretext of suspecting them, and sexually assaulted them.

During the inspection, the rest of the group noticed the officers intend to sexually harass the two teenagers and informed the authorities of the issue.
