US projection in a new global court against Iran

SHAFAQNA One week after US threated to quit the international accord relating to the UN top court’s jurisdiction because of its juridical losing against Iran, in a new lawsuit US lawyers requested ICJ to disqualify Iran from being heard at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague.

The United States is confronting Iran at the International Court of Justice over 1.75 billion (1.5 billion euros) in national bank assets seized by U.S. courts, in a case that could deepen the Trump administration’s rift with international justice.

Iran had dragged Washington before the International Court of Justice in June 2016 to oppose a US Supreme Court ruling that the $2 billion should go to victims of terror attacks blamed on the Islamic republic.

Repeating its previous allegations, the United States claimed that Tehran have “unclean hands”, and Iran’s “support for international terrorism”, should disqualify it from being heard at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague.

Hearing of US objections against Iran’s appeal comes a week after the ICJ in a separate case ordered the United States to ease sanctions reimposed against Iran after President Donald Trump pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran.

Last Wednesday the Trump administration announced it was not only tearing up the 1955 treaty but also that it was quitting the international accord relating to the UN top court’s jurisdiction.

The hearings in The Hague starting from Monday will run until Friday and focus on US objections to the UN’s highest court’s jurisdiction. No date for a ruling has been set.

The ICJ was set up after World War II to rule on disputes between United Nations member states. Its rulings are binding but it has no power to enforce them.
