Thousands of people from across the US gathered in Washington, D.C. for the third annual Women’s March Saturday.
In the original march in 2017, the day after President Donald Trump’s inauguration, more than 3.3 million women and men march together in solidarity has finally lost steam. The exact size of the turnout remains subject to a politically charged debate, but it’s generally regarded as the largest Washington protest since the Vietnam era, campbellrivermirror reported.
The event started with a half-mile march past Trump International Hotel, which was followed by a rally at Freedom Plaza, featuring performers and speakers, CBS Minnesota reported.
In the days leading up to the Women’s March in its’ third year, Single-digit temperatures didn’t deter the thousands of people who marched on the streets of Minnesota’s capital city.
The march started at Western Sculpture Park on Marion Street and led to the Capitol, where the crowd gathered to hear from students, activists and lawmakers.
The Muslim Democratic congresswoman from Minnesota spoke on Saturday at the Western Sculpture Park for the Women’s March rally being held there.
U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar told the crowd she is proud to be part of progress but there is more work to be done going beyond just women’s rights.
“Two weeks ago I was sworn into Congress with the most diverse and female freshman class,” Rep. Ilhan Omar said.
Clearly she is a woman who is well aware of the controversy surrounding the Women’s March organizers in their third year.
When we speak about equity we’re talking about economic justice, we are talking about environmental justice,” Rep. Omar said.

In the simple tweet Ilhan Omar reminds the reason why women march .
“The politics and controversy and loss of momentum at the Women’s March are not the story here”.
“This girl is the story here”, she tweeted.
Ilhan Omar also tweeted alongside her daughter Ilwad on Friday. In the tweet Omar shared, her daughter had a message for women on social media. As she put it quite simply:
“We are family. We are going to the Women’s March. Because we are women”.
Ilhan Omar knows more than a little something about fighting for her right to protest. She fled Somalia as a refugee with her family in 1991, spent four years in a refugee camp in Kenya before finally arriving with her family in the United States. In January, she was sworn in as the first Muslim woman elected to Congress, romper reported.
Her story bears repeating and repeating often. Especially to her daughter and all the young girls who need to know that there is strength in perseverance, especially when women persevere as a group.
