World reflect on anniversary of Islamic Revolution in Iran

SHAFAQNA | Nasibeh Yazdani – World’s media reflect on anniversary of Islamic Revolution in Iran on Monday, reported Millions of Iranians from all backgrounds have taken to the streets around the country to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution at a time of  economical problems due to US-led pressure.

Every year on this day, the nation turns out in droves to highlight support for the Revolution which replaced the US-backed regime with an Islamic Republic, press tv reported.

This year’s demonstrations come against the US withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal last May and re-imposition of tough sanctions on the country later.

Al Jazeera  reported that the Islamic Republic has disproven some American officials who said that it would not last 40 years and, on this year’s anniversary, Iranians are promising continued resilience against what government officials have said is the most hostile US administration in decades.

Iranians have taken to the streets across the country to mark the 40th anniversary of the 1979 revolution, renewing their allegiance to the country’s Islamic principles at a time of rising economic and political pressure amid the resumption of US sanctions. Estimates of the total crowd size across the country range from hundreds of thousands to millions of people, according to different Iranian publications, Al Jazeera reported.

Routers also said  Soldiers, students, clerics and black-clad women holding small children thronged streets across Iran, many with portraits of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the Shi’ite cleric who toppled the Shah in an Islamic uprising that still haunts the West.

China’s state Xinhua news agency reported that hundreds of thousands of Iranians attended nationwide rallies on Monday to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution.

The rallies in the Iranian cities were coupled with anti-US sentiments reflected in the slogans, the report said.

In the capital Tehran, people poured to the streets, chanting anti-US and anti-Israeli slogans and carrying images of Imam Khomeini, late founder of the Islamic Republic, and his successor and the incumbent Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, Xinhua’s report added.

Associated Press reported that Waving Iranian flags, chanting “Death to America”, hundreds of thousands of people poured out onto the streets across Iran on Monday, marking the date that’s considered victory day in the country’s 1979 Islamic Revolution. In Tehran, despite the rain, crowds streamed in from the capital’s far-flung neighborhoods to mass in the central Azadi, or Freedom, Square, waving Iranian flags and chanting “Death to America” — standard fare at rallies across Iran. The 6-mile-long downtown Enghelab, or Revolution, Street was decorated with huge balloons as loudspeakers blared out revolutionary and nationalist songs.

This year’s anniversary comes as Iran grapples with the aftermath of President Donald Trump’s decision last May to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal and restore tough U.S. sanctions.

Rouhani: Enemies will not achieve their ill-omened aims

Speaking from a podium in central Tehran, President Hassan Rouhani addressed the crowds for nearly 45 minutes, lashing out at Iran’s enemies — America and Israel — and claiming their efforts to “bring down” the country through sanctions will not succeed.

“The presence of people in this celebration means that plots by the enemies … have been defused,” Rouhani said. “They will not achieve their ill-omened aims.”

Rouhani also promised that Iran would overcome its economic hardships, worsened by the restored U.S. sanctions, the report said.

Addressing crowds gathered in Tehran celebrate the 40th anniversary of the revolution that broke Iran free of US dominance, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that Iran does not need and does not seek permission for its ballistic missile programme, ALJAZEERA REPORTED.

Associated Press reported also Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s elite Quds Force, attended a rally in the southern city of Kerman. He is widely seen as the mastermind of Iran’s extensive military activities across the region, which have also angered Washington.

In Tehran, 27-year-old medical student Hossein Hosseinpour walked with his wife and their 18-month-old son. He said he wanted to teach his son to support the revolution. “I see a bright future for him and our nation,” Hosseinpour said.

Mahmoud Hemmati, 35, was pushing his 68-year-old mother, Parivash Fakheri, in a wheelchair. “My mother, despite her illness, asked me to bring her out,” he said.

Fakheri, who was one of the revolutionaries on the streets of Tehran in 1979, said she would defend the revolution all over again.

“I know there are many economic problems today, but that is something different from our revolution,” she said. “It has been moving forward over the past 40 years and making Iran stronger.”

Last week, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the “Death to America” chants, saying they are aimed at America’s leaders, such as Trump, and not its people.

Zarif message in response to Trump: 40 Years of Failure to accept that Iranians will never return to submission

On Monday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif took to Twitter to praise the turnout.

“I bow in admiration to Iran’s resilient people who — despite hardships & grievances — today poured into streets by the millions to mark 40th anniv of their Islamic Revolution, which some in the US wished would never come. US should take note: REAL Iranians never succumb to diktats.”

U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted on Monday that the Iranian government had let down its people.

“40 years of corruption. 40 years of repression. 40 years of terror. The regime in Iran has produced only #40YearsofFailure. The long-suffering Iranian people deserve a much brighter future,” he posted in both English and Farsi.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif also responded on Twitter.

“#40YearsofFailure to accept that Iranians will never return to submission. #40YearsofFailure to adjust US policy to reality. #40YearsofFailure to destabilize Iran through blood & treasure. After 40 yrs of wrong choices, time for @realDonaldTrump to rethink failed US policy.”

US officials have adopted an extremely hostile policy toward Iran under the Trump administration, with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo pledging to “starve” Iranians until they give in to American demands.

Washington is calling for new negotiations which would include restraining Iran’s missile program and its role in the Middle East as well as the country’s support for anti-Israeli resistance movements, such as Hezbollah.

Iranian officials have stressed that the country would not negotiate its missile capability under any circumstances.

On Monday, life-size replicas of cruise and ballistic missiles lined the route to Azadi Square in Tehran.

In recent days, the country has unveiled new missiles to highlight its latest achievements on the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, press tv reported.
