Developing Iran-Iraq relations: Free visa, Fight terrorism and $20 billion trade

SHAFAQNA- In a meeting with the Speaker of the Council of Representatives of Iraq Mohamed al-Halbousi on Monday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said, “The parliaments of Iran and Iraq have a very important role in development of relations between the two nations and countries and are the biggest supporter of relations between the governments”.

Iranian President referred to the importance of interaction between the parliaments of Iran and Iraq to develop relations and cooperation between the two countries, saying, “Fortunately, today there is a strong resolve in all Iranian and Iraqi officials to deepen Tehran-Baghdad ties”.

He went on to refer to the decision of the two governments to facilitate interaction between economic executives and tradespeople, and said, “We should make efforts to further develop banking cooperation between the two countries”.

“Creating border markets at the joint borders of the two countries can promote relations and cooperation between Iran and Iraq,” said Dr Rouhani.

At the same meeting, Speaker of the Council of Representatives of Iraq Mohamed al-Halbousi described Dr Rouhani’s visit to Iraq very important and a turning point in the relations between the two countries.

He also said, “The parliaments and all political groups in Iraq welcome the country’s approach for development of relations and cooperation with other countries, especially with the Islamic Republic of Iran”.

Issuing visas for Iranian, Iraqi pilgrims, tourists to become free

After the signing of five memoranda of understanding between Tehran and Baghdad, Iranian President announced that the two countries had agreed to make issuing visas for Iranian and Iraqi pilgrims and tourists free.

Speaking in a joint press conference with the Prime Minister of Iraq, President Hassan Rouhani appreciated the warm welcoming of the Iranian delegation by the Iraqi nation and government.

He said, “In our negotiations with the Prime Minister of Iraq, we agreed to further develop relations between the two peoples, and in doing so, Iran announces that it will not receive any fees for visas, and the Iraqi side will announce that it will not receive any fees”.

Rouhani: We could defeat terrorists with each other’s help

President Rouhani in a meeting with representatives of Iraqi parties and political groups on Monday in Iraq stressed, “All Iranian and Iraqi parties and political groups supporting development of relations between the two nations indicates that the two nations have no disagreements in deepening relations”.

President Hassan Rouhani said, “In all these years, all officials of the two countries have made efforts to develop relations between the two nations”.

We are happy that the Iraqi and Iranian governments and nations have been alongside each other in critical points in history, said the Iranian President.

Dr Rouhani also went on to say, “At the time when the United States is seeking to pressurise the Iranian nation with its unjust sanctions, we need to develop and deepen our relations to stand against them”.

Stating that the Iraqi army and nation have stood up against the terrorists well, he said, “During the days when some countries were smiling, thinking that the people of Iraq would lose to ISIS terrorists, the Iranian nation stood by the people of Iraq and we could defeat the terrorists”.

“Fortunately, today we are seeing security and stability in Iraq and we are happy that a good democracy is happening in this country and all parties are working for the future of the country,” he said.

The President also said, “There is still a long way until we reach full security and stability in the region and terrorism is rooted out”.

He continued, “Terrorism cannot be eliminated with only military power, because the world powers are supporting them, and today, we are witnessing their unjust actions in Syria and other countries”.

Dr Rouhani also went on to stress the importance of unity and brotherhood among the countries in the region.

Describing Zionism and those who want to dominate the wealth of the countries of the region as the root cause of issues in the region, he said, “Major powers are seeking their own interests”.

“Today, Iran and Iraq are enjoying the closest relations with each other and the two nations love each other and their interest”.

He added, “All parties and political groups of the two countries’ welcoming of development of relations between Iran and Iraq indicates that we can continue this path for a better future for the region”.

Economic-Trade Forum of Iran and Iraq

Speaking at the Economic-Trade Forum of Iran and Iraq late on Monday, President Rouhani said that extensive economic and trade cooperation between Iran and Iraq benefits both nations and the region.

President Hassan Rouhani said, “The two Iranian and Iraqi nations have always been together in the recent years in creating security and stability”.

“The Iranian nation and government are very happy that they have been alongside the Iraqi nation and army from the beginning in their fight against terrorism,” he said.

Referring to the achievements of stability and security in Iraq, Dr Rouhani said, “Iranian economic and trade executives have stood by the Iraqi nation even when the country was insecure”.

He described the meeting of the high-ranking delegations of Iran and Iraq positive and said, “Today, good agreements were made by the two countries”.

“We are ready to have our tradespeople more active in Iraq and supply the required goods so that we can reach a good balance,” he said.

Dr Rouhani said, “It was also decided that visas still remain in place, but the fees were decided to be removed and visas be issued free of charge”.

The President of the Islamic Republic of Iran also said, “Iran is ready to develop relations in different fields such as energy, and supplying power and gas to Iraq”.

Stressing that Iran is determined to increase trade relations between the two countries to $20 billion from $12 billion, he said, “Facilitating banking relations can create a historic opportunity for the two nations”.

“Today, we are witnessing the closest relations between the two countries,” he said, stressing, “This historic opportunity can be a turning point in the relations between the two countries”, Official website of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran reported.
