SHAFAQNA- Arab countries condemned last week’s decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to recognize the Golan Heights as Israeli territory, Tunisia Foreign Minister said Friday at a meeting of Arab ministers ahead of the annual Arab League summit to hosted this year by Tunisia.
“We will work with fellow Arab countries and the international community to contain the expected repercussions of this decision in the various regional and international forums,” Jhinaoui told Arab foreign ministers at a meeting in Tunis. Tunisia currently holds the rotating presidency of the Arab League (AL).
He did not elaborate, but Arab countries want Washington to retract its decision, and to stop other countries following suit, REUTERS reported.
Arab states consider the Golan Heights as occupied Syrian land.
Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria and Arab East Jerusalem from Jordan in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed both in moves not recognized internationally.
Jhinaoui also said that the existence of the AL is important and imperative as a space that brings together all Arabs and allows their leaders to meet and discuss Arab issues, according to a statement released by the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Friday, CGTN told.
Arab foreign ministers met in the Tunisian capital Friday in advance of an Arab League summit slated for Sunday.
FMs reportedly discussed the summit’s agenda, which is expected to include mounting escalations between Israel and Gaza; the Syria crisis; the current situations in Libya, Yemen and Sudan; and ongoing efforts against terrorism, AA reported.
