The Supreme Religious Authority: There is a disrespect of scholars and religious symbols because of lack of intellectual and scientific modesty

SHAFAQNA- Alkafeel: The Supreme Religious Authority stated that there is a disrespect of scholars and religious symbols because of lack of intellectual and scientific modesty. There must be a scientific modesty so we respect science, and we must have an intellectual modesty so we respect the thought. And he does not have this modesty will be a joke, and he who helps him and praises his saying is like him, without modesty.
It stressed also that chaos is the reason of this and not freedom. We must preserve the sanctities, values and intellectual and scientific modesty. Unfortunately many of our youth have fallen into the trap, which needs efforts from everyone as they are the hope of the country. We must educate them the correct way for the benefit of the country, as the distorted thought does not build a future for them.
These were the important points stated in the second sermon of Friday prayer of the 28th of Rajab 1440 AH corresponding to April 5, 2019, which was held in the holy shrine of Imam al-Hussayn (peace be upon him) and led by his eminence Sayed Ahmad al-Safi, in which he stated:
Dear brethren, we have talked previously about a number of matters about some social phenomena, and we need to diagnose some of the problems, in the hope of finding general solutions for it.
We talked previously about “al-Haya’ [shyness and modesty]”. I think that the absence of this can lead to many problems! “al-Haya'” is a kind of decency against rudeness and shamelessness. And we highlighted the great dangers and negative impacts of lack of modesty in the society.
“Intellectual modesty” is different from traditional modesty, as some narrations state: “If you do not have shyness, then do as you please.” “al-Haya'” is when I feel ashamed because I made an act contrary to the public morals. And the life without these morals is closer to the jungle than humanity. The society must have the immunity to not allow a life without modesty, decency and shyness, and face the false claims of the fake freedom, as they are only calling for the destructive chaos that has no limits as some of those who don’t appreciate science try to tackle complicated issues, in a certain field of knowledge, while they are not qualified.
It is difficult to persuade an ignorant person, and it is useless, especially when an ignorant person has advocates. The Imam Ali (peace be upon him) described this sorrowful atmosphere as follows: “People are three groups: Divine scholars; the learners who are on the way of salvation; and the wandering mean ones who linger about every wind. They were neither lighted by the light of knowledge nor hasted toward a safe haven.”
The third group are people who neither know the right and firm path nor identify the course of movement; rather, they are prompted to move by blind following of the elect. The Imam has called them “hamajun ra’a”, i.e., the petty flies sitting on the faces of animals, and the foolish ignoble who are moved around by any blowing wind and drift along any flow without achieving any firm position. By the Imam (peace be upon him)’s analysis, those who neither know the right way of life nor allow themselves any deliberation and knowledge, and blindly follow others, are like flies that have gathered around those more ignorant that themselves and cherish it. Such people neither possess a firm intellectual status nor are able to stand on a steady position.
Therefore, we call on the Iraqi government, civil society organizations, families, and schools to reinforce the sense of appreciating science and avoid floundering.
We notice that some people don’t interfere in medicine, engineering, or other sciences, but they interfere in religious sciences, thinking that religious matters are easy to deal with. In fact religious matters are extremely difficult, and a cleric would spend his entire life studying to write his compilation of Islamic laws, while some clerics are hesitant and don’t write theirs, because it is a heavy responsibility.
We criticize firmly those who attempt to prove that they are religion specialists and deal with religious matters in a way that depreciates science and others who disrespect clerics, scholars, and religious symbols. Those who do such acts are inconsiderate and have no sense of scientific modesty.
There must be a scientific modesty so we respect science, and we must have an intellectual modesty so we respect the thought. And he does not have this modesty will be a joke, and he who helps him and praises his saying is like him, is without modesty.
Chaos is the reason of this and not freedom. We must preserve the sanctities, values and intellectual and scientific modesty. Unfortunately many of our youth have fallen into the trap, which needs efforts from everyone as they are the hope of the country. We must educate them the correct way for the benefit of the country, as the distorted thought does not build a future for them.
Therefore, we are calling on the Iraqi government to distinguish between freedom and chaos, noting that God has created people as liberal beings who must respect one another.
We ask the Almighty Allah to bestow the good upon our country, to protect our youth and everyone. We pray the Almighty for the end of this chaos state and so we respect each other. And, the latest of our prayers is; praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds, and Prayers and Allah’s Peace be upon Mohammad and his pure and virtuous lineage.
