Iran, Syria urge US to stop waging economic terrorism

SHAFAQNA- Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad-Javad Zarif  met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus  to discuss issues of mutual interest on Tuesday. During this meeting, Iran, Syria urged the U.S to stop waging economic terrorism against other states.

Heading a high-ranking diplomatic delegation, Zarif arrived in Damascus earlier on Tuesday, at the invitation of the Syrian president.

Upon his arrival at the Syrian capital, Zarif said the one-day trip mostly aims at discussing with Syrian officials the US unlawful and hostile moves against Iran and Syria.

In a meeting with visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Damascus on Tuesday, the Syrian leader said the recent designation of the IRGC as “foreign terrorist organization” was yet another “wrong” move by Washington, which could further destabilize the region.

During the meeting, the two sides emphasized that the hostile policies of the US and certain Arab countries cannot prevent Iran and Syria from defending the rights of their nations, the statement added.

Assad and Zarif further urged the US and its Western allies to stop waging wars and using economic terrorism against other states who refuse to do their bidding and return, instead, to diplomatic means in dealing with them.

For his part, Zarif censured Washington for recognizing the occupied side of Syria’s Golan Heights as Israeli territory, saying the measure showed the defeat of the American agenda for the region.

Zarif noted Trump’s unlawful recognition of the occupied Syrian Golan Heights as sovereign Israeli regime’s territory, his recognition of Jerusalem al-Quds as the regime’s capital, and the US’ “unprecedented, illegal and extremely stupid” move to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization are the topics of discussion with the Syrian officials, Mehr News Agency told.

Zarif said he and the Syrian president explored ways to promote bilateral ties.

The two sides also discussed the Astana peace process for Syria and the progress in the bilateral deals signed during Assad’s trip to Iran in February, he added.

Prior to his meeting with Assad, Zarif sat down for talks with his Syrian counterpart, Walid al-Muallem.

“Resistance of government and people of Syria against the danger of terrorism saved the people of this region from a big danger and conspiracy”, Mohammad Javad Zarif said.

The Iranian foreign minister stressed the need for expelling all the terrorists from Syria and respecting the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In the meantime, the Syrian foreign minister, for his part, lauded the high-level cooperation between Tehran and Damascus in all fields, and called for broadening of allout ties between the two states, IRNA told.

He said that foiling the enemies’ complicated plots was the result of two countries’ cooperation.

The two officials also discussed bilateral relations as well as regional and international developments.

The top Iranian diplomat arrived at the Damascus International Airport earlier on Tuesday at the head of a delegation and was welcomed by Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad.

Speaking to reporters upon arrival, Zarif said his trip was aimed at coordinating efforts among regional countries to counter “hostile” US policies, including the recognition of the occupied Golan Heights as Israeli territory, the recognition of Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s “capital” as well as its “illegal and unprecedented” decision to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) a “terrorist” group.

Such measures, Zarif added, stem from Washington’s repeated defeats both on the battlefield and the political front in the region.

Zarif then visited the holy shrine of Hazrat Zeinab, the granddaughter of the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), south of Damascus.

Zarif left Syria for Turkey next to hold separate talks with the country’s senior officials. His visit to Turkey comes a week before the Astana-format Syrian settlement talks, which will be held in the Kazakh capital of Nur-Sultan on April 25-26, in attendance of the Iranian, Turkish and Russian officials.
